DIY Coasters – Monopoly Money Coasters that is

I think it is wrong that only one company makes the game Monopoly.
-Steven Wright

lol, I love this quote! So true, isn’t it? I found it while looking on the internet for Monopoly coasters!
Now, you have probably seen this kind of tutorial all over Pinterest.
A tutorial for DIY coasters
Whether you have or haven’t seen them, I want to show you how I made my Monopoly ones.

I got the sudden inspiration to make coasters when I started to redo my lil’ bro’s room. If you have been a follower for some time, you know that I made a promise to redo his room into a “cool” room. He wanted a game room/man cave, and of course you are supposed to eat in a gameroom/man cave, right? Well, I wanted to be prepared for any drink or food that would enter the presence of the soon to be “cool” room.

These couldn’t be your run of the mill foo foo coasters either, they had to be teenager quality….but I also couldn’t spend 30 bucks on coasters…So I made them myself.

What do you think?? Huh? They look really great in person, and a perfect fit for the game room theme I was going for.

They take a little waiting time, but the finished product will be fantastic!

what you need

What you need

  • White biscuit tiles 4”x4” as many as you want coasters (they only cost 18 cents each!)
  • Mod Podge (the small bottle will work)
  • Spray Acrylic sealer (Matte)
  • Brushes
  • 4×4” pics OR Monopoly money
  • Hot glue gun
  • Felt for the underside of the coasters

how to make it

UPDATE: I attempted to find pictures on the internet and blow them up to the size I needed, (to make plot coasters) but every time I touched a picture with mod podge, it smeared. The monopoly money worked a billion times better.

Start by covering the glossy side of your tiles with Mod Podge. Without getting glue on the front side of the picture yet, position the money onto the tile and rub out all the bubbles. Overlap the money by adding mod podge to the underside and placing onto the tile. Let dry.

Put Mod Podge over the top.

Once dry, add some more Mod Podge. And do it again- I did 3 layers of Mod Podge

Don’t worry, I can just imagine your face right now…the Mod Podge will not dry like this, it will dry clear ;)

Once you have done 2-3 coats of the Mod Podge, spray on 2 coats of acrylic sealer, allowing it to dry in-between coats.

I know, I know, it takes forever for this stuff to dry…like 5 whole minutes!!! Who can wait that long!? Is anyone out there a patient crafter? If you are, maybe we can have lunch together, so I can learn some things -Ha! ;)

Let the coasters sit and fully dry for 24 hours before use.

Voila! Congrats- You made it!

Remember, don’t submerge these cute cool fellas in water.

Do you like them?? What kind of money pattern did you put on yours?

Peace out!

I felt “cool” when I typed that

Wednesday the Second

Hey y’all!

Well, September’s quilt is going great! Actually…I’m almost done with it! I had started it last month and it is just a very tiny quilt. The “binding” (which is really just a satin ruffle) is almost all the way on. All that’s left to do is to trim the minky :)

Hopefully I will have it finished and shipped off today and I can’t wait to show you at the end of the month!

Also, I now work at Hobby Lobby! Ya, that awesome place with tons of awesome things! I now am a cashier in that wonderful place and hopefully I will eventually move to the fabric department to start cutting what I love…….fabric :)

School started last Monday (24th) for me and my brother started this Monday (31st). He’s got two more years of high school! You got this lil’Bro!

10 hours of school and a part time job is kinda tough but I’m getting the hang of things. All classes except one are online so that does help. And don’t worry peeps… I’m still finding a way to quilt and blog sometimes for you guys! :)

That’s basically what’s up with me this week!

How was yours?
