Guitar Quilt

This quilt was made as a graduation gift for my big brother.

This is one of my faves! Maybe because friends and family signed it :) The guitar is appliqued and the strings are sewn on with silver metallic thread.

Here are a few pics:

Let’s get started with SUPER GLITTERY CONFETTI:

what you need

  • Scrapbook paper
  • 1” punch
  • Regular hole punch
  • Sack
  • Glue
  • Pen

It sounds like a lot, but this is also a mini tutorial on how to make a cute coordinating bag :)

DIY FUN 007

Okie doke, so….

DIY FUN 008 DIY FUN 013 DIY FUN 011 DIY FUN 010 To make the confetti, all you need to do is punch a bunch of circles out with your 1” whole punch. Seriously…BAM, done.

Now don’t you just want to get a spoon and eat it!? I mean, it’s glitter and confetti, all rolled into one! How could you not want to take a bite? :)

.

Storage. You can’t just throw the confetti in the birthday box and hope for the best, for this birthday in a box, you want to store that glittery awesomeness in something, so how about a darling bag?

I got my pink one at HEB actually. 25 cents…what could be better than having the cashier say: “your grand total is one quarter.”

Nothing! That’s what. :)DIY FUN 015

Where that flap lands, (The dark shadow in the pic) cut a straight line across so you are able to stick something all the way through (like a tunnel)

DIY FUN 017

DIY FUN 019

Fold one of the ends up and glue in place (about an inch)

So now only one end should be open, kind of like, well, a bag :)

DIY FUN 021

Punch some little coordinating circles out and glue on the bag to add a little touch of personality.

DIY FUN 121

Finally, add in the confetti and seal the bag with a 1” white circle glued on the open flap that reads: “confetti”

The confetti is done, now for the TOOT HORNS:

what you need

  • Toot horns from the dollar store or other party supply store
  • Coordinating scrapbook paper (I used 3 different colors)
  • Hot glue gun and stix
  • Scissors
  • Crepe paper or tissue paper

DIY FUN 122

Tear up a horn

Yeah you heard me right :)

Take one of the horns you bought and disassemble it by pulling off the noise part and then undoing the glued part of the paper/cardboard/horn part (this will be your pattern)

For as many horns as you have, using your pattern, cut out different colors/pieces of colorful paper

DIY FUN 023

Stick a little hot glue on the horn and place one end of the paper on it.

DIY FUN 026

Wrap it around, add a bit more of hot glue on the other end and glue it down

DIY FUN 027

See?

DIY FUN 028 DIY FUN 029

Stick it back in the noise part and hot glue in place.

DIY FUN 030

DIY FUN 031

To add a bit of extra fun, cut a strip of tissue paper 2 inches wide and glue around the large part of the horn

Cut the ends so it flairs out!

Oh, and don’t forget to TOOT AWAY! Blow one of those suckers as loud as you can (it’s kind of like a stress reliever…for you, not the people around you – ha!)

DIY FUN 037

Now how about a PARTY HAT??

what you need

DIY FUN 118

DIY FUN 038Cut out your pattern piece

DIY FUN 042

Assemble and  glue in a cone with a wee hole at the top

DIY FUN 043

DIY FUN 045

  DIY FUN 046DIY FUN 047

DIY FUN 048Make a pompom

If you don’t know how to do this, wrap yarn around about three fingers. When your fingers begin to hurt and turn red, I think you have wrapped enough.

Tie a piece of yarn around the middle so there are two sets of loops on either side.

Cut the lops, trim, and shake a bit to poof it up.

DIY FUN 049

Tie a long piece around the pompom and string the end through the wee hole at the top of the hat

DIY FUN 054 DIY FUN 051

Glue the pompom and loose string in place.

DIY FUN 058 DIY FUN 057

I did this after, but it would be much easier to do this part before you embellish the bottom half of the paper hat (that at this moment should look awesome!)

Punch a hole on either side of the hat

Thread a VERY long piece of ribbon through and tie a HUGE knot so it will never ever ever ever come out! bwhahahahahahaha…..okay, sorry

DIY FUN 055 DIY FUN 056

anyway, to embellish, Cut a 1” wide piece of tissue paper

Cut evenly spaced fringe on either side

Staple or glue it to the bottom edge of the hat

DIY FUN 063

OoOooOOooo that looks good darling!

Alrighty, next I’ll show you how to make a mini pinata.

DIY pinata

what you need

  • Cardboard box
  • Candy
  • Tape
  • tissue paper or crepe paper
  • Scissors

DIY FUN 065

Cut out two identical shapes. I chose the classic donkey look, of course. Here is the pattern I made, but it is slightly large, so you are going to need a big box (I used an Under Armour shoe box)

DIY FUN 066

DIY FUN 072

Cut a strip of cardboard (mine was 2.5” wide) and following the shape of your pinata, make a sort of box using lots of tape.

DIY FUN 076

On the piece not yet attached, cut out a little “door” for all that candy goodness to get stuffed in.

fill the pinata

Assemble on the open end and stuff that sucker with candy galore!

Seal off the “door” with tape

DIY FUN 084Just as you did with the toot horns, cut about a 2” wide piece of tissue paper, cut it to look like fringe, and then hot glue around the pinata, starting with the legs and overlapping every time you move up.

It will look like this (hopefully) when you are done:

it's done!

Now for birthday ribbons:

diy ribbon

what you need

  • 4 strips of paper 4” x 3”
  • Two cordinating pieces 1” x 6”
  • Safety pin
  • glue stick – glue gun – and glue stix
  • Scissors
  • Pen or marker

DIY FUN 086DIY FUN 087DIY FUN 093DIY FUN 089

Remember those paper fans you made as a kid? Well take those 4 year old skills out of the old memory bank and fold all four pieces of 3×4 paper. Pics will help :)

DIY FUN 090

Fold each one of those “fans” in half, so it looks like you have 8 mini fans.

DIY FUN 091

Glue them together to make a larger “fan” (you should have four)

DIY FUN 094

Glue them in sets of two, so you have two even larger “fans”

let dry

DIY FUN 096

Glue those two together on one side, let dry, and then stretch slightly and glue the other end to make one giant circle!

DIY FUN 097

Take your 1×6 strips and cut the ends to look like a V

DIY FUN 098

Glue these strips to the back and finish it off with a paper circle to make it look cleaner

DIY FUN 106

Write a Happy Birthday message on another circle and glue to the front

DIY FUN 107

Finish by hot gluing a safety pin to the back circle (you may need a lot of glue to keep it in place)

DIY FUN 119

Voila! There you have it!

Assemble it, decorate the box and:

DIY FUN 114

Finish off the birthday in a box with THIS CARD on the top that says on the front: READ ME FIRST

Whew! I warned ya, this is the longest post ever! But glad you made it to the bottom. You can celebrate your awesomeness by pinning this image:)

Hope you had a great one!

First Quilt Ever

My first quilt EVER! Everybody go awwwwwwwww….

“awwwwwwwwww”

This is the quilt that got me started and I’m still doing quilts like this!

It is just basic blocks with a flower border, ‘X’ quilting and hand sewn binding.

I started this quilt in about 2006. I was around 9 or 10 years old and a wonderful lady, who babysat me and my brothers sometimes, could quilt. I wanted to learn, so she taught me how to do the basic: “sewing a straight line”

I got the top together (without the border) and then I don’t really remember details but for some reason we never finished it.

Later, we moved to another city.

It sat in a bag until 2011 when another wonderful lady, who will forever be known as the one who got me into quilting, helped me finish it! She taught me everything I know and I’m so grateful for her :)

Without further ado, here are some pics of my FIRST EVER quilt:

College Life Wednesday

Everyone is almost done!

I’m so excited to be able to see each and every one of my friends walk the stage to get their diploma! There is just one graduation ceremony left and then we will all be fishies again. Into college. Some are leaving, some are staying, but we are all moving on. This will be our last summer where we will all be together and while it is saddening, I can’t wait to see what God has planned for everyone. I know one who wants to be a missionary and one who is going into engineering, one who is going back to their country and one that is staying in town. We are all so different, but your differences is what brings you together.

Maybe you are graduating soon, or graduated, or are graduating today. Either way, I pray God blesses you in your next step in life.

“Throw your heart out in front of you, and run ahead to catch it…whatever you desire, imagine it’s in front of you, and grab it.” -Unknown

Chase your dreams, chase your heart. Nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it, and

“Nothing is impossible with God!” Matthew 19:26

The very word impossible consists of “I’m Possible”

Do your best, strive for greatness, and do what you love most!

Eat em’ up Kats! :)
